History and background
Slovak and Czech are mutually intelligible, and speakers of both languages can generally understand each other.
Standard Slovak is based on the Central Slovak dialect, codified by Ľudovít Štúr in the 1840s.
Slovak became an official EU language when Slovakia joined in 2004.
