History and background
Japanese uses three writing systems simultaneously: kanji (Chinese characters), hiragana, and katakana.
The Tale of Genji, written around 1000 CE by Murasaki Shikibu, is considered the world's first novel.
Japanese borrowed its writing system from Chinese but adapted it to fit a fundamentally different grammar.
Distinctive features
Japanese uses three scripts simultaneously: kanji for content words, hiragana for grammar, and katakana for foreign words.
Japanese has an elaborate honorific system (keigo) with distinct humble, polite, and respectful forms.
The language is Subject-Object-Verb in word order, and the verb always comes at the end of the sentence.
